1월 4일 왜 지금은 안 되는가?
“베드로가 가로되 주여 내가 지금은 어찌하여 따를 수 없나이까?”(요 13:37)
하고 싶어도 할 수 없는 때가 있습니다. 그럴 때 우리는 왜 기다려야 하는지 알 수 없어 답답해합니다. 하나님이 당신에게 대답하지 않고 그저 기다리게 하실 때, 혼자 바쁘게 움직이려 하지 말고 기다리십시오. 그 기다림은 죄에서 분리되어 거룩해지는 성화를 당신에게 가르쳐 주려고 온 시간 일 수 있습니다. 혹은 성화 후의 섬김이 무엇인지 가르쳐 주려고 온 시간일 수 있습니다. 하나님이 지시해 주시기 전에는 결코 앞서 가지 마십시오. 조금이라도 의혹을 품는다면 하나님은 인도하지 않으십니다. 의심이 든다면 기다리십시오.
처음에는 하나님의 뜻을 명확하게 안다고 생각할 것입니다. 친구와의 이별, 사업 실패, 또는 하나님이 원하신다고 뚜렷이 느낄 수 있는 일들 말입니다. 그러나 충동적으로 행동하지 마십시오. 그러다가 어려운 상황을 초래하고 그것을 해결하는 데 몇 년이 걸릴 수도 있습니다. 하난미의 때를 기다려 하나님이 이루시도록 하십시오. 하나님은 누구에게도 상처나 실망을 주시지 않고 일을 이루실 것입니다. 그 일이 하나님의 섭리라면 하나님이 움직이시도록 기다려야 합니다.
베드로는 하나님을 기다리지 않았습니다. 그는 마음속으로 어떤 시험을 받을 것이라 짐작했지만, 정작 그에게 다가온 시험은 그가 예상하지 못한 것이었습니다. 베드로는 장담했습니다. “주를 위하여 내 목숨을 버리겠나이다.” 정직하시만 무지한 선언이었습니다. “예수께서 대답하시되... 닭 울기 전에 네가 세 번 나를 부인하리라”(요 13:38). 주님은 베드로 자신보다 훨씬 더 깊이 그를 아셨습니다. 베드로는 자신의 능력을 완전히 알지 못했기 때문에 아직 예수님을 따를 수 없었던 것입니다. 충동적 헌신은 우리를 예수님께 이끌고 그분께 강한 매력을 느끼게 하지만, 결코 우리를 예수님의 제자로 만들지는 못합니다. 그런 헌신만 갖고 있다면 언젠가는 예수님을 부인할 것입니다.

January 4 Why Can I Not Follow You Now?
Peter said to Him, "Lord, why can I not follow You now?" —John 13:37
There are times when you can’t understand why you cannot do what you want to do. When God brings a time of waiting, and appears to be unresponsive, don’t fill it with busyness, just wait. The time of waiting may come to teach you the meaning of sanctification— to be set apart from sin and made holy— or it may come after the process of sanctification has begun to teach you what service means. Never run before God gives you His direction. If you have the slightest doubt, then He is not guiding. Whenever there is doubt— wait.
At first you may see clearly what God’s will is— the severance of a friendship, the breaking off of a business relationship, or something else you feel is distinctly God’s will for you to do. But never act on the impulse of that feeling. If you do, you will cause difficult situations to arise which will take years to untangle. Wait for God’s timing and He will do it without any heartache or disappointment. When it is a question of the providential will of God, wait for God to move.
Peter did not wait for God. He predicted in his own mind where the test would come, and it came where he did not expect it. “I will lay down my life for Your sake.” Peter’s statement was honest but ignorant. “Jesus answered him, ‘…the rooster shall not crow till you have denied Me three times’ ” (John 13:38). This was said with a deeper knowledge of Peter than Peter had of himself. He could not follow Jesus because he did not know himself or his own capabilities well enough. Natural devotion may be enough to attract us to Jesus, to make us feel His irresistible charm, but it will never make us disciples. Natural devotion will deny Jesus, always falling short of what it means to truly follow Him.
