4월 29일 불확실성의 은혜
장래에 어떻게 될지는 아직 나타나지 아니하였으니(요일 3:2)
우리는 수학적으로 계산하면서 살아왔기에 불확실한 것을 나쁘게 생각합니다. 우리는 자신의 계획이 이루어져야 안전하다고 생각하지만, 영적인 삶의 속성은 그렇지 않습니다. 영적인 삶의 속성은 불확실성 속에서 확신을 누리는 것입니다. 따라서 우리는 이 땅 어디에서도 확신할 수 없습니다. 상식은 말합니다. “그래, 나도 저런 상황이라면 안전할 텐데.” 그러나 우리는 결코 처해 보지 않은 상황에서 자신을 가정해 볼 수 없습니다. 확실성은 상식적인 생활의 지표입니다. 은혜로운 불확실성은 영적인 삶의 지표입니다.
하나님을 확신하는 것은 우리의 모든 면에서 불확실성을 인정하는 것입니다. 우리는 오늘 한 날에 어떤 일이 일어날지 알 수 없습니다. 이러한 불확실한 현실은 보통 슬픔의 한숨으로 표현되지만, 실은 벅찬 기대로써 맞이해야 합니다. 우리는 다음 단계에 어떤 일이 발생할지 불확실합니다. 그러나 하나님을 확신합니다. 우리가 주께 자신을 내려놓고, 그래서 맡기신 가장 가까운 의무를 수행하기 시작하면 그분은 언제나 깜짝 놀랄 일들로 우리의 삶을 채우십니다. 우리가 자신의 특별한 관념을 주장하고 옹호하려고 할 때 우리 안의 믿음은 죽어갑니다. 단지 하나님에 대한 우리의 관념을 믿는 것입니다. “어린아이같이 되지 않으면”(막 18:3). 영적인 삶은 어린아이의 삶입니다. 우리는 하나님에 대해 불확실하지 않습니다. 주께서 다음에 무엇을 하실지에 대해 불확실할 뿐입니다. 만일 우리가 자신의 믿음만 확실할 경우 자신만 고생한 사람으로 여기고 다른 사람을 향해 매우 비판적인 자세를 갖게 됩니다. 그러나 우리가 하나님과 바른 관계를 갖게 되면 우리의 삶은 불확실한 미래로 인해 오히려 저절로 넘치는 기대와 기쁨으로 가득 차게 됩니다. 예수님은 “나를 믿으라”고 말씀하셨지 “나에 관한 너의 신념을 믿으라”고 말씀하지 않으셨습니다. 모든 것을 주님께 맡기십시오. 주님이 어떻게 오실지 알 수 없는 것이 영광스러운 불확실성입니다. 그러나 주님은 반드시 오십니다. 주님께 충성을 다하십시오.

Gracious Uncertainty

Our natural inclination is to be so precise– trying always to forecast accurately what will happen next– that we look upon uncertainty as a bad thing. We think that we must reach some predetermined goal, but that is not the nature of the spiritual life. The nature of the spiritual life is that we are certain in our uncertainty. Consequently, we do not put down roots. Our common sense says, “Well, what if I were in that circumstance?” We cannot presume to see ourselves in any circumstance in which we have never been.
Certainty is the mark of the commonsense life– gracious uncertainty is the mark of the spiritual life. To be certain of God means that we are uncertain in all our ways, not knowing what tomorrow may bring. This is generally expressed with a sigh of sadness, but it should be an expression of breathless expectation. We are uncertain of the next step, but we are certain of God. As soon as we abandon ourselves to God and do the task He has placed closest to us, He begins to fill our lives with surprises. When we become simply a promoter or a defender of a particular belief, something within us dies. That is not believing God– it is only believing our belief about Him. Jesus said, “…unless you…become as little children…” (Matthew 18:3). The spiritual life is the life of a child. We are not uncertain of God, just uncertain of what He is going to do next. If our certainty is only in our beliefs, we develop a sense of self-righteousness, become overly critical, and are limited by the view that our beliefs are complete and settled. But when we have the right relationship with God, life is full of spontaneous, joyful uncertainty and expectancy. Jesus said, “…believe also in Me” (John 14:1), not, “Believe certain things about Me”. Leave everything to Him and it will be gloriously and graciously uncertain how He will come in– but you can be certain that He will come. Remain faithful to Him.
